Prior to the outbreak of WWII the German Army was involved in the Spanish Civil War. It was used by the German Army as both a training and testing ground for troops, material, and tactics as well as securing a neutral allay at the southern border of Europe.
Because they needed to test the men and the machines of their newly assembled Air Force, in advance of the world war they were planning.

They provided weapons, economic support, and even volunteer forces, as well as air power support for Francisco Franco's Fascist armies in order to defeat the Communists in Spain. The Communists were supported in turn by the USA, Britain, and the Soviet Union. The US Abraham Lincoln brigade, for example, was a volunteer brigade of US citizens which fought against Franco's Fascists and contained many Communists.

There are a few reasons as to why Hitler got involved: firstly Hitler wanted to use this opportunity to eliminate all communists in the world, and thought that helping the right-wing rebels to fight against the Communist was a good start. The second reason was that Hitler needed a place to try out his new weapons that they had just produced, due to their re-armament.
