In the beginning, until the men got used to it. Leadership in Vietnam was conducted by WWII veterans, they were un-customed to fighting a limited war (a war in which the US Military could not "nuke" the enemy until victory was accomplished; as was done in WWII).
It demonstrated the effectiveness of total war - attacking the civilian under-pinning of the armies, and destroying military and civilian morale.

One of the biggest concerns for US families at home was having a member of their family drafted into the military, and then possibly sent to Vietnam. Many American familiy's lives were routinely lived with "who's next"? Vacations, college graduations, high school graduations, marriages, child births, promotions at work, were all effected with "who's going to get drafted tomorrow."? Living under those conditions for ten years lowered morale in the US.

Many returning veterans experienced rejection from their fellow US citizens, and US military morale suffered because of this experience.
