In the War of 1812, the US was partially protected by the Atlantic Ocean, which made it expensive for Britain to bring its full military force to bear. Aside from that, Americans proved to have considerable military ability, for a newly independent nation. The frontier mentality seems to be conducive to fighting. America was always at war, if not with the British, then with the Indians, and so it became a militaristic nation.
