WWII ended the USA's isolationism and caused us to be more involved in the rest of the world, doing our best to stop the spread of communism. WWII also aided the USA's and the world's advancement in weapons and general technology (Ex- the atomic bomb). African American soldiers that fought in the war came home and expected America to give them a warm welcome, although some won awards, America remained heavily segregated, thus sparking the true beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. The war also aided the USA economically.

The immediate affect of World War 2 at the beginning was an event called the phony war. Britain maintained a stance of appeasement because that is what the Prime Minister wanted. After Japan attacked the immediate effect was the tragedy of the deaths of the servicemen and the loss of many ships in the Naval Force. The Presidential Cabinet and the Pentagon had to scramble to make decisions how to get revenge (Doolittle Raid) and how to build up the forces and armament. At the end of the war the immediate effect was dealing with the homeless and starving people in Europe. They also had to deal with all the Jews from the concentration camps. They brought in medical forces to care for them but many died anyway because they were too emaciated to survive. They also had to bury millions of dead bodies strewn all over Germany and elsewhere. Japan was occupied by the US. Japan needed food and health care so they went to work to solve that problem.

The short term effects were on Britain, Japan and Germany and the islands of the Pacific. While Africa had warring it was mostly in the desert and the general populace of the African nations did not have as many short term effects as did Europe and the Pacific Asian nations and islands. Abyssinia was the exception to that however.

The short term effects were:

  • Bomb out cities
  • Loss of homes and business
  • Loss of income and food goods
  • Loss of ships and cargo in the Battle of the Atlantic and Britain
  • Strict Food and product rationing
  • Evacuation of civilians in Australia and Britain
  • Loss of family members killed in the war
  • Loss of high morale
  • Fear, hopelessness, and grief
  • Loss of planes and other war equipment and people
