"Escalation" means to increase; an appropiate term. The war did escalate; it went from a guerrilla war of US Military advisers and small unit contacts...to B-52 stratofortress bombers and hi-tech jet fighter plane dog-fights (aerial combat) over the skies of North Vietnam (Operation Rolling Thunder).
With the massive build up of men, from 1965 onward, 500,000 men at the peak of the war.
There was no surprise attack, simply an escalation of violence.
The war escalated at an extreme rate after 1965 due to the following; after congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, Lyndon Johnson had the full power of the American military at his disposal to send to Vietnam and with this massive increase in troops he also began Operation Rolling Thunder. Operation Rolling Thunder involved bombing North Vietnam until Ho Chi Minh ended the insurgency in the south. This did not occur, Johnson then sent a further 145 000 ground troops on search and destroy missions throughout the Vietnamese jungle.
The most common request made by US commanders during the Vietnam War, was a constant request to the President for: More men. (40,000 men a month were being drafted by 1968). This was called the "escalation of the war."
The US just won WWII! Just won Korea! In both wars with FIREPOWER! Why play games with the commies (was their way of thinking)...use FIREPOWER again and win the darn thing! In either case; President Johnson remembered the atom bomb and the invasion of North Korea which brought in Red China; which escalated the Korean War into a bloody mess. Consequently, cooler heads prevailed...and there would be no nukes in Vietnam nor any invasion of North Vietnam.
Johnson.
Johnson escalated the war.
No US President wanted to be the FIRST to lose a war.
To put an end to the communist threat that was uprising in Vietnam, which was started by Ho-Chi-Mihn. Also to support the democratic South vietnam.
President Johnson's policy was to do what was necessary to defend South Vietnam against being conquered by North Vietnam. This involved a continually increasing number of US troops, which was described as escalation. Or as Tom Paxton put it, Lyndon Johnson told the nation Have no fear of escalation I am trying everyone to please Though it isn't really war We're sending fifty thousand more To help save Vietnam from the Vietnamese.
We did not support escalation in Vietnam except for a small amount who were afraid of communism. The war escalated after the Tet Offensive primarily, which was actually an action of the Vietnamese.
With the massive build up of men, from 1965 onward, 500,000 men at the peak of the war.
He didn't; Presidents Kennedy and Johnson wanted to increase it in response to escalation of North Vietnamese aggression.
Tonkin Gulf Incident
One event that caused an escalation of troop involvement in Vietnam was the incident in 1964 at the Gulf of Tonkin.
We did not support escalation in Vietnam except for a small amount who were afraid of communism. The war escalated after the Tet Offensive primarily, which was actually an action of the Vietnamese.
The United States claimed that North Vietnam fired at American ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. This led to the Gulf of Tonkin resolutions which gave President Johnson the power to do what ever he deemed necessary to protect America. Many people believe North Vietnam never fired at American ships and Johnson just made it up for an excuse to go to war.
