Former home of the US Army's "Americal Division", Chu Lai is about 50 miles south of Da Nang on the coast.
Cam Ranh Bay was a beautiful seaport, as well as a large military base. The Russian Battleship Fleet anchored there in 1905 enroute to the battle of Tsushima, fought on 27 May 1905. Cam Ranh Bay, Bien Hoa, Da Nang, were all major entry points into South Vietnam...by airliner or ship. With the exception of the Tet offensive in 1968, combat normally occurred outside of those major bases.
There are cemetaries in the former South Vietnam; they were buried. Many of those heavily decorated (white stone crosses, statues, etc.) cemetaries might still have much gunfire and grenade damage to them, as US patrols experienced many a firefight in those cemetaries.
Conventional forces in large numbers began arriving in country in '65.
If Long An is in the old III Corp area (the old Military Region (MR) III) then it's within 50 miles of Saigon from any direction. Saigon was in III Corps. The Delta was IV Corps; Highlands II Corps, and Da Nang/Hue/Phu Bai/Quang Tri/Dong Ha was I Corps.
Da Nang was primarily a US Navy/US Marine Corps/US Air Force area of operations; with US Army units rotating through it. Recommend: "Where We Were In Vietnam: A Comprehensive Guide to the Firebases, Military Installations and Naval Vessels of the Vietnam War 1945-1975." By Michael P. Kelley.
