In Europe the first celebration was for the surrender of Germany, and was called VE day (Victory in Europe) in Britain.

A second, much smaller, celebration was held in some places when Japan surrendered: VJ day.

In Germany the harsh winter of 1945/6 saw large numbers of people starve to death or freeze to death in the streets - especially the old and children.

They called it Jahr Null (Year Zero).
