Nearly all the major battles were fought in the South, the big exceptions being Antietam/Sharpsburg (Maryland) and Gettysburg (Pennsylvania).

There were a few battles in Kansas, Ohio and the District of Columbia (Union) and rather more in West Virginia (many of which took place when it was still formally part of Virginia and therefore "the south"), Maryland (slave but union) and Missouri (slave but claimed by both sides), and some battles against American Indians in the northwest, but outside of that, the fighting was almost entirely within territory claimed by the Confederacy, so it makes sense that most of the destruction would be there.
