In World War 2 it succeeded because of the increased mobility and amount of firepower the Germans were able to bring immediately on the battlefied due to the inclusion of tanks, which simply bypassed strongpoints not able to be reduced rapidly, and aircraft, which were used as flying artillery pieces to knock out key positions. Very similar to today's warfare tactics.
