WW2 in Europe was 10 months away from ending when Normandy occurred. It was a turning point; but it was not "THE" turning point of the war in Europe...the Soviet Union (Russians) were already defeating the Germans when the WESTERN allies landed. The "Real" war in Europe was between the Russians (Soviets) and Germany; over 75% of the German war effort was engaged on the Russian Front.

I have to agree with the answer above. Fighting was the fiercest on the Eastern Front as well as where the most casualties were suffered. The Battle of Leningrad alone is the costliest in history in terms of casualties. Hitler deployed over 200 divisions to the Eastern Front and only about 50 to defend the Western wall.

I'm by no means trying to disrespect the efforts of the Western Allied forces but I feel that it's a shame that Americentric perspectives have fueled ignorance regarding the contributions of the Soviets.
