President Eisenhower sent US Military Advisers to Vietnam in 1955, with the first US casualty occurring in 1956 (a US Airman). President Kennedy sent the US Special Forces (Green Beret) to Vietnam in 1961. President Johnson sent US Regulars to Vietnam in 1965. President Nixon fought some of the bloodiest campaigns during the war with his B-52 Bombers, and gradually began withdrawing US troops from the war. Nixon USED the B-52's to reduce US Casualties while he was withdrawing his forces (the B-52's were used as covering fire). President Ford pulled ALL US personnel out of Vietnam in 1975, when the South collapsed to the invading North Vietnamese Army. 1959 is to some historians, the recognized organization of the Viet Cong (Communists living in South Vietnam, as opposed to regulars of the North Vietnamese Army/NVA). MOST historians choose the years 1961-1975 as the Vietnam War years.
