Much bigger population from which to recruit armies.
Traditional advantage in artillery, including new rifled cannon
Industrial capability - access to all kinds of war-supplies
More railroad mileage - whole armies could move by train
Big enough navy to blockade Southern coast
During the Civil War, the United States was divided into the Union and the Confederacy. Twenty states belonged to the Union, and there were also four border states that did not secede from the United States, but also did not give up slavery. The Confederacy had eleven states.
The Union or the North had a huge advantage over the Confederates or South in terms of population. The Union had 23 million white residents while the Confederates only had 5 million. Add that every state that seceded from the Union also outfitted a regiment of Union loyalists who fought for the North and you are left with the major reasons why the Civil War was eventually won by the Union.
The Battle of Baton Rouge took place on August 5, 1862. It was fought between the Union and the Confederacy. The Union Army claimed victory.
The Union, the so-called Northern States had at least five advantages over the South in the US Civil War: 1. The North had a solid and growing industrial base; 2. The North had a large enough naval fleet to make significant blockades on many Southern seaports; 3. The North had a larger population and thus were able to replace and increase the number of troops in its army; 4. The Confederacy was unable to mount any successful offensives in the North. Thus most of the battles were in the South and for the most part the South was in a defensive mode; and 5. The North had a larger and more modern railway system than the South. Although the South made better use of their own railway systems, the larger system in the North was still an advantage.
When the USA split in two, the southern half was called The Confederate States of America, and the northern half was called The United States of America. It was also called the Union during the War.

So they could all be ALLIED! NEW RESPONDENT. Becausethe Confederacy was splitinto two parts for the second time. Particularly, the March to the Sea allowed the Union to to take from the rear the easternfront of the Confederacy.
There are advantages to the employee and to the employer Advantages to employees of a single-union agreement 1-there is only one union to negotiate with management - discussions are clearer. 2-most employees are in one union and not spread across several unions and therefore have greater power. 3-there are no disagreements between different unions. 4-a better working relationship should develop between the management and the union. 5-disputes are probably solved more quickly as only one union is involved in negotiation. Advantages to employers of a single union agreement ohh i am bored writing these things if anyone wants them send me a message at jasmin-jordan-jerusalem@windowslive.com and i will write them. The Union won several significant battles during the American Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg (1863) which is often seen as a turning point in the war, the Battle of Antietam (1862) which was the single bloodiest day of the war, and the Battle of Vicksburg (1863) which gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. These victories played a crucial role in eventually leading to the Union's ultimate victory over the Confederacy.
