The causes of the American Civil War are almost from the start of the country itself. The idea of state's rights in relation to the Federal government was an issue that plagued the country for years. During the war of 1812, New England considered secession because it was economically hurt by the war against the British. The issue of slavery is often brought up but that is in relation to the subject of state rights. Did Washington have the right to dictate to those states who disagreed with it?
The economics of the country also have to be considered. The northern states were industrial while the southern state were agricultural in culture and identity. In a sense they were two separate countries if one looks only at that. Southern states resented not only Federal control but also northern economic policies that hurt southern policies.
The consequences of the Civil War was that the issue of state's right in relation to Washington's control was finally answered. Yes, there are those who still like to debate this, but the reality is that no state today will secede. Slaves were of course freed which gave African-Americans the right to form their own identity as citizens and to add more to the culture of this country. The Civil War can be known as America's second "founding" in that the country was able to create a new identity and direction.:PPP tooo long
