Gosh.... now there's a concept, a successful war. I think WW1 is probably a very good example of a war that everyone lost, in some way or other. The Germans were certainly defeated. The Russians too, on a horrific scale. Austria/Hungary was broken up & the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, was a thing of the past. The Anzac forces lost heavily in the Gallipoli campaign. France lost a great many young men, Britain too. Civilians were affected in warfare, not in the front line, but at home too, for the first time. Unrestricted Submarine warfare attacked defenceless Merchantmen. Poison gas, land mines, barbed wire, the advent of armoured warfare, aerial warfare, bombing defenceless people...... Please don't misunderstand me, I am as fond of a good war film as most, but the idea of a war being successful is not something i altogether agree with. Both, say, Wellington & Napoleon were great Generals, successful in great measure in their time, a hundred years before WW1, but the idea of a successful war, it does not fit my view of History. Now who was it who said one mans death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statitic ?
-Treaty of Versailles
-Countries Destroyed, horrible conditions, extreme circumstances = extreme response, gave to rise of Facism, Nazism and Communism, not ideas, but countries controlled by regime believing in those ideals. (in Japan, Germany, Italy and Russia)
-destroys Britain and France
-America becomes more influential
-Spanish Flu millions people dead
-The actual fighting, human cost
-Europe left in utter devestation years after
The major positive result was the establishment of the League of Nations, the forerunner of the United Nations. But that's about it. The Leage of Nations moreover turned out to be a toothless tiger and the US Congress decided that the US would not join it, although it had been an initiative of the US President.
The peace treaty of Versailles only served to cripple Germany's economic recovery and lead to severe political and social problems in Germany. This created a lot of resentment on the side of Germany towards the Allied powers and started the "the worldwide Jews are behind this" Propaganda in Germany that finally would lead to the Holocaust. The treaty was finally at the root of the war's continuation by Germany 20 years later as WW II.
Another 'achievement' if you will of WWI was the foundation of the USSR and the rise there of Communist power. Imperial Germany did everything in its power to destabilize Russia and get it to sue for peace. They did this by helping the Communists win their October revolution, when they found that the democratic Government in power after the February 1917 revolution that toppled the Tsar, intended to fight on against Germany.

If world war one had not happened then I don't think that world war two would have happened. Sometimes you have to ask yourself: What did it achieve? If you can't come up with an good answer then there was almost no point in the world war one. If world war one had not happened then there would probably not have been a world war two!
to achieve victory in Europe before trying to achieve it in Asia.
