Answer

Russia became involved in WWI because Serbia, and ally of Russia, was attacked and accused of assassination by Austria-Hungary.

Answer

Russia entered the war after Austria declared war against Serbia, because Russia had made itself the guardian of all Slavic and/or Eastern Orthodox peoples, particuraly the South-Slavs in the Balkans who had for centuries been under Muslim-Ottoman domination.

It began with the Boer War

On 28 June 1914, Serbian member of Young Bosnia, assassinated the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Bosnia. This began a period of diplomatic maneuverings between Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France and Britain known as the July Crisis. Austria-Hungary was wanting to end Serbian influence in Bosnia for good. In response to the assignation, they delivered an ultimatum of 10 things Serbia must do to avoid a war. These demands were obviously impossible to accomplish and done so with the goal of deliberately initiating a war. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on 28 July 1914, the birth of WWI. Serbia had previous ties with Russia and had engaged in treaties obligating Russia to aid and protect Serbs from invasion. These sort of treaties existed between several nations of Europe and ironically came to be a main reason for causing the extent of WWI.

Russia was a allie in the world war 2, but still got invaded. Even though Russia is massive, German took over.Russia wasn't really on any team during World War 2, They only protected their country when Germany tried to invade Russia to take the Oil Farms. This made Russia angry because the Germans were killing civilians and stealing oil so eventually Russia declared war on Germany. German forces tried to take south-west Russia Stalingrad (now called Volvograd) One of the most bloodiest battles in history. The Germans made their way into Stalingrad and killed many soldiers and pushed the Soviet Union (Russia's army) to the Volga River, whilst the Soviets were trying to break through German defence the Soviets launched operation Uranus rushed and flanked the Germans and eventually surrounded the Germans. But this was fatal with the Soviets having many casualties which nearly made up half of all Casualties during world war 2. Adolf Hitler got news of the 6th Army (the German Army fighting in Stalingrad) being surrounded and cut off from reinforcements and supplies. Hitler tried to supply his men with the correct things through air drops, but the Soviet tanks shot down many planes crushing German hopes of taking Russia. The 6th army were eventually destroyed and that marked the first major defeat on land for the Germans. After defeating the Germans in Stalingrad the Soviets turned to Allied forces and fought their way to Germany weakening German forces which forced the Germans to give the Armies fighting the British and French on the Western front to retreat back to Germany which gave the opportunity to siege Germany.

Before World War I Russia consisted of the Russian Empire. In order to maintain the security of their empire, Russia joined in a series of alliances that intertwined them with the major Allied Powers-Britain and France-through Russia's promise to defend Serbia. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia was duty-bound to declare war on the Austro-Hungarians to defend the sovereignty of Serbia.

Before World War II, Josef Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union (at the heart of which was Russia), signed a Nonaggression Pact with Adolf Hitler of Germany. Through the pact, the Soviets and the Germans divided Poland and conquered the Baltic region, and split territories in the Balkans. Hitler disliked surrendering that much territory to Stalin, though, and decided he would attack the Soviet Union. On June 22, 1941, Hitler launched a surprise offensive codenamed Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union, with the intention of annihilating Stalin's regime.

The worst affect was probably that it lost millions of soldiers. It has been said that Russia lost ten soldiers to every 1 soldier Germany lost. Russia essentially threw enough soldiers in front of the Germans that the Germans bullets ran in short supply due to the fact that they were taking out so many Russian soldiers. It was stregnth in numbers for Russia because it wasn't due to strategic or tactical military movements.

It was agreed that the Russian Army would seize Berlin; hence, the Cold War!

Additionally, with the Red Army's victories in WWII Russia was now considered a world superpower.
