The Suez Canal was of strategic importance during the Cold War, even in the age of nuclear weapons. Both the US and the USSR had an interest in influencing the countries involved in the Crisis, and in keeping the canal open. So when Britain, France, and Israel attacked Egypt in 1956, the US convinced them to withdraw, rather than risk an escalation into a regional war (which nonetheless occurred 9 years later in the Six-Day War).

Global military movements require naval forces. It used to be called "military projection." Any short-cut that allows naval forces to move quicker to a designated location is of strategic importance.
The Panama Canal allows naval forces to avoid the long voyage around the Southern Tip of South America. During the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905, the Russian battleship fleet went around the southern tip of Africa when Britain denied them use of the Suez Canal. Having the canal in Egyptian hands threatened the same type of exclusion.
