Tonkin Gulf ships were attacked ( this was LBJ who made it up).
pretty much because it isn't entirely true that LBJ had no choice but to go to war. It's often argued that due to domestic reasons (his great society program), "domino theory" in south east asia, to protect the credibility of the US and lessons learnt from WW2 all meant he had no choice. Fredrik Logevall argues against this by saying all those reasons were hyped up and LBJ practically just took matters into his own hands cause of his ego. I personally think Robert Dallek offers a better answer saying it wasn't so much the decision to go to war that cemented the term but more so his playing with the media and not allowing public debate. Do a bit of research on LBJ's personality and it kind of answers itself really.
This was an air campaign conducted by the US Air Force & US Naval Airmen. Operation Rolling Thunder was the code name given to us bombings of strategic targets in North Vietnam is 1965. It was used by the US, under president Johnson. This method was used in order to put pressure on the south, in order to make them stop supplying the vietcong, end the war and start negotiations. However, it brought no end to the conflict and failed to have any impact on the war.
The two presidents during the Vietnam War were JFK, and LBJ.
