There were many feelings of nationalism, Imperialism, and militarism, which no doubt helped the war get started, but there were 4 main causes, which forced the president to concede that war was the answer, regardless of the fact that his slogan was "he kept us out of war".

1. The sinking of the cruise ship Lusitania.

2. The interception of the Zimmerman Telegram.

3. Open submarine warfare brought back into play.

4. Alliances amomg the countries, which slowly brought every one of them into war, one after the other.
