In World War II, Adolf Hitler led Germany (and allied Japan & Italy) to wage war on the rest of the world, including Britain, France (defeated), Russia, USA, Australia and many others. He cited the humiliation Germany suffered at the end of World War I to rally the German people and he began taking over Europe.

The war basically started when Hitler invaded Poland. He had been taking small areas of territory the Germans owned before World War I for a while. But once Poland was invaded, the Allies finally declared war on Germany. Hitler quickly defeated France and began a long siege on Britain. Getting nowhere, he attacked Russia (who was bound by a pact with Germany not to fight). Hitler found he had stretched his resources too thin, and when the USA joined the war, he started to lose his grip. Eventually, the Allies took Berlin and Germany was defeated. Hitler comitted suicide.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Japan had been attempting a similar 'world domination' strategy. The Japanese allied with Germany & Italy, as they all had similar goals and hatred for the Allied powers. The USA, China and Australia were the main countries fighting mostly in the Pacific. Although Germany had been defeated, Japan continued fighting. But then, the USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This scared the living daylights out of the Japanese and they surrendered.

Also during this time, Hitler was persecuting Jews all over Europe. This was known as the Holocaust, where Jews in their thousands were taken from all the countries Hitler conquered. They were put into concentration camps where they were tortured and mass murdered, with poison gas.
