As for "did it have to be that way?" - my guess is probably not. But that is one of the questions that historians, philosophers and political scientists have been arguing over since the war started. The Communist leader Lenin, for example, believed it was unavoidable and was unsurprised that it was as bad as it was. But there are plenty of opinions to the contrary, that the war could've been avoided- even the combatants believed it could have been avoided and that Germany forced it to happen, which is why Germany had to agree to the War Guilt Clause of the Treaty of Versailles.
