The Japanese invaded some of the Aleutian Islands. There were battles on them. Many hundreds of Japanese and American were killed. There are now memorials and parks, such as on the Island of Attu, dedicated to the men who fought to protect the US mainland from the Japanese forces.

Sadly many of the men who went to the islands, including the Army Engineers, not only succumbed to injuries they had to treated for trench foot or rather frostbite and some lost their lives due to the harsh environment of Alaska. The US Army had to learn a hard lesson not to send soldiers into cold environments without proper clothing and gear. The Eskimos were hired to help with defense and keeping an eye out for the Japanese. They also taught the US soldiers how to dress, sleep and eat properly in the freezing storms and weather.

Some of these Eskimos were given special recognition and I believe a few received medals. See the link below and follow some of the links on that web page when you read it.
