It turned the tide of war in Europe, because it opened a third front to which Germany had to commit its dwindling troops and resources. With more than half of German forces on the Eastern Front, and many of the rest trying to hold Italy (after the Italians switched sides), there were not enough German reserves to stop the massive influx of armies through the French beachhead. The Allied forces which had been built up in Britain could now be unleashed in multiple attacks on the Western Front. The war that had dragged on for 4 years was concluded in another 11 months.
