During World War II, Japan controlled parts of several nations and islands, including Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, parts of China (notably Manchuria), the Solomon Islands, Guam, and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). These territories were occupied or annexed as part of Japan's military expansion in Asia and the Pacific. The occupation often involved significant military presence and harsh treatment of local populations.

The Pacific Islands were strategically attacked and seized during World War II primarily to establish military bases and secure supply lines for the Allied forces. Control of these islands allowed the Allies to launch operations against Japan, disrupt its supply routes, and ultimately facilitate the island-hopping campaign. Additionally, the islands served as critical points for air and naval operations, enabling the Allies to gain a foothold closer to the Japanese mainland for future offensives.
The small island of Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands chain in the South Pacific, was the site of an important battle during World War II. From August of 1942 to February of 1943, American and Japanese forces battled on land, in the air, and at sea for control of this jungle-covered island, with the Americans finally gaining control.
The camp at Buna, also known as Buna Beach, was bombed by Allied forces during World War II as part of the campaign to take control of the Solomon Islands. Specifically, air strikes were conducted by American forces targeting Japanese positions in the area. The bombing aimed to weaken Japanese defenses and support ground troops during the Pacific Theater operations.
The Japanese and Americans fought for control of the islands of Attu and Kiska which are part of the Aleutian islands .
In 1886, Great Britain and Germany divided the islands between them, but sometime later Britain was given full control and leadership of the entire territory. The Japanese invaded the islands at around 1942, but, in 1945, Britain regained control.

During the Aleutian Islands Campaign of World War II, approximately 500 Canadian soldiers from the 13th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group participated alongside American forces. They were primarily involved in the defense of the Aleutian Islands after the Japanese occupation of Attu and Kiska. Their contributions were part of a larger Allied effort to reclaim these islands from Japanese control.

Officially, the Republic of Marshall Islands is an independent nation in free association with the United States. In practical reality, the Marshall Islands are a self-governed protectorate of the US. Over half of the Marshall Islands GDP comes from US aid. Before 1944, the Marshall Islands were controlled by a series of European colonial powers; Spain, Germany, and Japan. During WWII, the United States Navy bombarded Japanese facilities in the Marshalls, and occupied the islands in 1944. In 1947, the Marshalls and many other formerly-Japanese controlled islands became the Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands under the auspices of the United Nations. The Republic of Marshall Islands became quasi-independent in 1986.
