There were three types of steam driven riverboats, in general. Sidewheelers had a paddle wheel on both sides of the hull. Sternwheelers had one paddle wheel in the back of the boat that spanned the width of the boat. There were also a few propeller driven steamboats. The S. S. Sultana was, as seen in surviving photographs, a side-wheeler, so it had paddles on both sides of the boat.
