The British were better equipped and severely outnumbered the colonial militias. The American armies, however, had to fight a defensive war. This helped them secure the advantage, and also allowed them to attack the Brits at will. The latter was known as guerrilla warfare, which took the Brits by surprise and led to countless casualties.

In the first failed attack not much resulted. (George Washington almost died) The second (successful) attack directed by Pitt turned the tide for the British. Fort Duquesne then became renamed Fort Pitt (becomes Pittsburgh).
Because it was a trick played by the Americans on the British. It became an easy win for the Americans because they caught the British off guard. It was also a crucial part of the Revolutionary War, because the Americans were being defeated very badly, so Washington needed a plan, and fast.
Americans have never attacked Britain. They have, though, fought and attacked the British, namely in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

The Americans attacked the British a couple of times in Winter. George Wahington decided that they would attack them when they least expected it, so they went in Winter and won the Winter battle.

The only advantages that the Americans had were numbers and a slightly better knowledge of the land. Their strategy was to fight a head-on battle be crushed, regroup, and then attack the British rear guard doing some damage. Thus they declared a "victory".

General Gage was the commander of all British troops in America at the start of the Revolutionary War. It is generally believed that he clundered by ordering a frontal assault on the Americans fortifications on Breed's Hill at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He had been advised to land troops by boat behind the Americans left flank and attack them from there. If the British had landed behind the Americans, they would have had to retreat from their fortifications or get trapped on the hills. Instead, Gage ordered the frontal attack to show the Americans that the British army could just swat the Americans away, but the Americans showed him that the Americans knew how to fight back. Later, Gage was forced to evacuate Boston and shortly he was replaced and went home.
