The US used British and French tanks in WWI; and after the war, modeled the US tanks after the French Renault tanks (in the beginning). In WWII, the US built and used the LEE medium, Stuart light, M-4 Sherman medium, M-24 Chaffee light, and M-26 Pershing Heavy Tank (reclassified later as a medium tank). All of these tanks fought in both theaters of the WWII against the Japanese and the Germans. During the Korean War (1950-1953), the M-26 Pershing became the first of the "Patton" tank series, when it was re-designated the M-46 Patton tank. Then came the M-47 Patton (which never saw combat with US Forces); The M-48 Patton, which fought in the Vietnam War; the M-60 Patton, and last of the series, was used by the US Marines (US Army used the M-1 Abrams) during Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
