During (and prior to) World War II, Japan's ambition was to become the dominant power in Asia. At the expense of the traditional Asian power, China, and in defiance of the colonial powers of the modern West, Japan intended to occupy and control the key regions of the Pacific Basin and the Asian continent, and all points in-between, as their imperial overlord.
