Americans questioned the fairness of the draft because college students could easily avoid it. Vietnam was America's last drafting of young men for the military. And we still had "authorized" ways of buying one's self out of that. If a fellow stayed in college, carried 18 units and a 2.0 average, he received a "college deferment." If one was too poor to go or didn't go to college, then obviously he could't receive a "college deferment", and the army would be sending him a letter.

During the Vietnam War, some Americans questioned the fairness of the draft because it seemed to favor wealthier citizens and punish poorer citizens. In particular, Americans who could afford college (and were enrolled) were passed over, leaving those unable to do so subject to being drafted.

That was in the North, where a young man could pay a substitute to do his service for him.

This caused resentment in the ranks. It was also a bad principle. Who were these substitutes? Obvously men who had either been rejected first time round, or dodged the draft, or deserted.

During the turbulent 60s with all of the race riots it seems the draft was accelerated to get men of color off the streets and draft them. Although we made up 12% of the total population, a higher ratio of Black young men were being drafted. President Johnson and J Edgar Hoover FBI Director (who hated Dr King) connived to get as many young Black men off the streets across the nation and send them to Vietnam. I was 19 in 1967 when I got drafted and yes I was sent to Vietnam. It was mainly poor or working class Whites, Blacks and Hispanics and a few Asians
