It might be easier to state which USN aircraft carriers did not serve in Vietnam. In which case the answer would probably be none. Nearly all US carriers conducted a WESPAC cruise to either Yankee or Dixie Station (North or South Vietnamese Coastline).

Three of those carriers suffered terrible fires/explosions during the course of the war: USS Enterprise, USS Oriskany, and the USS Forrestall.

No carrier was directly attacked by the enemy; only the USN destroyers USS Maddox, USS Higbee, and cruisers USS Boston & USS Oklahoma City suffered direct attacks by the North Viet Air Force or North Vietnamese Navy. And the USS Boston's story would take a whole different chapter to tell.

The most highly decorated US warship that fought in Vietnam is the Iowa class battleship, USS New Jersey; she fired nearly 6,000 rounds of 16" and nearly 15,000 rounds of 5" shells during her tour on the gunline.

I believe the above answer to be in error! Yes, BB-62 has been said to be the most decorated ship of the Navy, but the question is in regards to Vietnam service. USS New Jersey earned few awards for service in Vietnam.

The true answer to the question is not known for sure. There are several ships in contention, including USS Harnett County LST-821, USS Hunterdon County LST-838, USS Jennings County LST-846, USS Washtenaw County LST-1166, USS Benewah APB-35, and other ships of the Brown Water Navy, including at least one Coast Guard cutter. I say this because all were awarded Combat Action Ribbons and at least two Presidential Unit Citations, multiple awards below the PUC, and many battle stars. But who knows, there may be a destroyer, carrier or other ship lurking out there that tops the list!

This is only a guess, but the answer could be USS Washtenaw County LST-1166. I say that because she just may have earned 3 Presidential Unit Citations (two were listed in previous OPNAV Notice 1650 listings, now superseded by the Navy awards link below), and has recently been officially acknowledged as qualifying for all 17 battle star periods, which is the maximum possible for service during the Vietnam War. An 18th battle star period was recently added to cover the 1975 evacuation of Vietnam, but this was after our involvement in the war came to an end. The link was edited out, but a search of "US Navy Awards" will lead one to the awards dot navy dot mil site where 'unit awards' can be researched.

What is the the most decorated ship of the Vietnam War?

The most highly decorated ship of WW2 was the USS Enterprise (CV-6), the only survivor of the Yorktown-class of carriers. The Yorktown was lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942; the Hornet, the ship which launched the Doolittle raid in which B-25 Mitchell bombers were launched from her decks to bomb Japan, was lost at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands just over 4 months later in October 1942. The Enterprise is often considered the most decorated ship in U.S. Navy history as well as just WW2. She was awarded 20 Battle Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, and the British Admiralty Pennant, among other awards. The British Admiralty Pennant awarded to Enterprise is the only Pennant awarded to a vessel outside of the Royal Navy in its 400 year existence. The Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947 and ultimately scrapped between 1958-60 when enough money to save her from the cutting torch for a memorial or museum wasn't able to be raised. A few of her artifacts remain, such as her ship's bell, which is at the Naval Academy.

Was the Bismarck the best ship in world war 2?

To the British yes, because the "greater the foe, the greater the glory." In reality, the greatest ship in WWII was the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV6). She was the most decorated US warship in history and was far more powerful than any battleship.

How did fighters get from North Vietnam to South Vietnam?

US Marines & US Sailors got there by ships. US Soldiers originally deployed with their whole units, thus they too went to South Vietnam by ship. After the USA units were in place (in country) then replacements usually arrived by chartered civilian airliners (like TWA, Flying Tiger Airlines, Braniff, etc.). US Marines/Sailors continued to deploy via ocean going vessels.

What is the most decorated ship of the Vietnam war?

Was. USS Enterprise (CV-6) was re-cycled (scrapped) in 1959. The current most decorated USN warship is the Iowa Class battleship USS New Jersey. The New Jersey has the distinction of being the world's last battleship to conduct combat operations as a traditional battleship; all guns, no missiles. New Jersey fired nearly 6,000 16" shells during her tour on the gunline in Vietnam.

If you go to Asia on a cruise ship do you need a Vietnam visa if you do not plan to get off of the ship in Vietnam?

Yes. Most cruise lines have agreements with the ports-of-call that makes the cruise ship searchable by local police while in port. The cruise ship is under a limited jurisdiction by the local authorities, so even if you don't get off the boat -- you are still in Vietnam.

What was the largest US ship in World War 2?

The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the most decorated warship in WWII. She outlived her sisters USS Yorktown (CV-5) and USS Hornet (CV-8) who were sunk at Midway and Santa Cruz in '42. She was the last of the Yorktown class fleet carriers. An attempt to save her as a memorial failed, and she was scrapped in 1959. Currently, the most decorated US warship might be the battleship USS New Jersey, this warship is the only Vietnam Veteran Battleship, holding 19 battlestars. She fired almost 6,000 rounds of 16 inch shells at communist target in Vietnam; more shells than she did in WWII and Korea combined.
