I don't think there is one. Our involvement was so gradual that you can't fix a date for it. We were diplomatically involved in the original rebellion against the French because of our involvement in WWII. After the establishment of North and South Vietnam we were immediately a supporter of South Vietnam, providing it diplomatic, economic and military aid. President Eisenhower sent a small number (around 50 I think) of military advisors to help the South Vietnamese army. Kennedy incresed the number of advisors and allowed them to begin engaging in conbat. Johnson sent in still more troops, not advisors, and incresed their combat role. Then, after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, he rapidly incresed the number of troops and U.S. forces began doing most of the fighting. I am doing a project about this. I researched this, the twin towers was a symbol of America and how far they have gotten money wise. Osama Bin Laden wrote a letter to America, the writer asked why he attacked the twin towers. Well the bigger question is why did Osama attack America. Osama replied America attacked Palestine. They didn't attack us first and emperor Hirohito of Japan didn't want to attack us but General Hideki Tojo wanted to conquer us and said " the American bases in Hawaii makes Hawaii a dagger pointed at our throats." Roosevelt and Churchill had met in secret in August of 1941 and had planned in advance what the U.S. would do when it entered the war. Winston Churchill spent Christmas of 1941 in the White House, keeping an eye on what Roosevelt was doing, and encouraging him to do what was best for England. The common enemy in Europe that Churchill and Roosevelt shared was Adolph Hitler and the Nazis.

US troops were already in South Vietnam. The Tonkin Gulf Resolution gave the president power to use whatever military force he felt necessary to protect US interests in Southeast Asia. Specifically the resolution gave the president authority to attack North Vietnam (bomb North Vietnam); which he ultimately ended up doing with Operation Rolling Thunder.
