Depends, Today they enlist. The reason for some are the benefits the armed services offer, depends on the individuals reason for joining. There used to be a draft. Selective service. Names were chosen from this and letters were mailed to addresses to tell the individual they had been selected. This system was not voluntary, you were required by law to report.
