Due to it's location and size, Japan had to get most of it's industrial raw materials, such as iron ore and petroleum, from other countries. It's primary goal in WWII was to acquire enough land rich in raw materials to be independent from other countries. It's secondary goal was to gain enough territory to form an effective defensive perimeter that would prevent others from retaking the land they had acquired.

The Axis powers were trying to take over other nations. Germany wanted to control Europe, Japan wanted to control the Islands of the Pacific. Allied powers wanted to stop them. -I should add that neither the Japanese or Germans ever had any intention of 'taking over' the USA land or resources, despite what the top poster has stated.

To drive out the western influence from the westen Pacific Ocean area. The Japanese felt that they should rule the region, not Europeans and Americans who reside thousands of miles away. The Japanese also needed the raw materials in southeast Asia and the surrounding region to continue to prosper. Being an Island nation Natural Resources were limited.

The Japanese objective in World War 2 was to control the natural resources need to maintain Japan as a powerful, self-sufficient empire.
Given the number of armies they sent to invade the various countries, it seems that nothing short of conquest of the Asian countries and Pacific islands was their goal. I know that Hitler once thought it might be possible to link up with Japan at the Suez Canal.
