they were japaenies pilots in World War 2 that flew their airplanes into ships, trying to sink them
In a desperate attempt to stop the American's advance towards Japan near the end of the war in Asia, suicide attacks were made on the American naval forces. Japanese kamikaze pilots deliberately aimed their aeroplanes at the American warships - their aim was to crash onto the deck of the American ships.

Kamikaze attacks were Japanese attacks on US ships by flying planes into the hulls of ships. In 1944, the Japanese were being deprived of resources. Their planes were outdated by this point and they had lost most of their experienced pilots. The situation was so desperate, the Japanese thought it was a justified solution to commence suicide attacks by sending planes armed with explosives to crash into US ships. It would produce much greater damage than using traditional bombs and torpedoes. Kamikaze translates to "divine wind" or "spirit wind." These attacks strictly followed the Japanese tradition of fighting to the death instead of surrender, capture, and shame. Unfortunately, kamikaze attacks couldn't be completed in a large enough scale to stop the US Navy from advancing towards the Japanese home islands.

Kamikaze is also the name of a Japanese destroyer during WWII. The Imperial Japanese named their destroyers after natural phenomena, like weather, wind, tide, current, wave, moon, and season. Some examples are: Fubuki ("snowstorm"), Akizuki ("autumn moon"), Hatsuharu ("spring rains"), Shiratsuyu ("shimmering dew"), and Shimakaze ("island wind"). Honestly, I love the Imperial Japanese destroyer naming conventions. They are such beautiful names and it is sad to think most of them were sunk during the war.

"Kamikaze" originates from the year 1281 when the Mongols tried to invaded Japan. Kublai Khan, the son of Genghis Khan, was continuing his father's legacy of an undefeated empire and sent his navy to invade Japan from the south. The kamikaze refers to the winds of the typhoons that dispersed Kublai Khan's navy in southern Japan. Japan was the only area that Kublai Khan was unable to conquer.

Why did Japanese refer to the storms as kamikaze?

The correct answer is ‘kamikaze’. The Japanese refer to two typhoons that happened in the 1200s as kamikaze, which translates as ‘divine winds’. These kamikaze saved Japan from a Mongol invasion. Kamikaze underwent a meaning change in WWII to refer to suicide attacks by pilots.

Why did Japan's use of kamikazes illustrate about its desire to win the war?

The theory behind kamikaze attacks were twofold: 1) A manually piloted missile is more accurate than a "dumb fired" missile. 2) A kamikaze attack is a form of psychological warfare, as the knowledge that your enemy has no fear of death can be frightening. Kamikaze attacks are also related to the so called "banzai charge" - where ground troops would launch a massive wave of infantry in an attempt to avoid surrender and maximize odds of victory. Kamikaze attacks were actually not very effective and their effectiveness waned as the war waged on. Losses caused by kamikaze attacks did not significantly weaken Allied forces.
