Let it be said that the question implies that indeed there were "10" causes for the US Civil War. What can be said with authority is that there were many factors that contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War.

Some textbook reasons for the causes of the Civil War were generally economic and ideological conflicts in the midst of a changing society.

1. The proponents of slavery wanted to expand their influence into the new territories and their efforts were thwarted by many of the northern representatives in Congress. Several compromises made by Congress did not ameliorate the situation.

2. The extreme dependence on the south on the economy that was supported by the use of slaves, mainly agriculture. The south at that time was not industrialized, did not have mining and transportation resources. Their economy and population was not growing and so they resisted the change from the status quo.

3. The Constitution was silent on the issue of slavery, mostly because the founders themselves were conflicted on the issue. For example, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson had slaves.

4. Abraham Lincoln won the election without being on the ballot in the southern states, so it was another case of conflict over states rights over the federal government. Actually, the seven southern states seceded before Lincoln was elected.

5. People came to see that slavery was an evil institution and that concept trumped the economic view of the value of slavery to the economy.

6. The American System, after the War of 1812 espoused a system of tariffs aimed at developing American Industry--mostly in the north--and international trade. It really did not support the needs of the southern states.

7. The south, despite a sizeable wealthy population, was increasingly left out of the prosperity of the northern regions of the US. Their soil was growing less fertile due to over use.

8. The population of the south was not increasing since most immigrants settled in the north or in newly non-slavery territories.

Here is a summary of problems & issues that led to this dreadful conflict:

1. The British should never had made slavery legal when they were in control of the 13 Colonies;

2. The founders of the US Constitution should not have ratified it until the document outlawed slavery, over a gradual amount of time;

3. The United States should have implemented a plan similar to the British one, when they abolished slavery in their holdings in the West Indies. This entailed among other things, compensation to former slave owners;

4. Southern leaders should have taken a wider view of the Western European world and surmised that slavery was becoming obsolete & politically a issue of concern;

5. Southern leaders should have followed the North's industrialization policies and made the plantation system, only a part of the Southern economy;

6. The election of Republican Abraham Lincoln as President, could have been avoided if the Democrat Party in all areas of the nation presented a better candidate. With a Democrat as President, the force behind the anti slavery radical section of the Republicans would have been nullified;

7. Before hostilities began, the South should have created a powerful ally in Great Britain by offering them a discounted deal on cotton;

8. The South should have created the Confederacy, but not engage in any conflicts with the North. With this in hand, the South could have approached Britain with the idea that Britain would have territorial rights in places such as the Washington territory, which bordered on Canada;

9. By not attacking any Federal forts or property, the new Confederacy could have just used passive non combative policies and thus not antagonized anti Southern sentiments in the North; and

10. After the Confederacy was formed, it should have begun to create an army and navy. This was possible because each State had a militia. Southern States could have then be better prepared to fight with an already made army. As it was, the South had no war facilities.
