The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand (a Serbian terrorist group), while visiting Sarajevo.

Austria-Hungary was enraged and wanted someone to pay. So they issued an ultimatum where Austria-Hungary wanted Gavrilo Princip to be executed but Serbia, who had a law that anyone under the age of 21 (which Gavrilo Princip was) would not be executed.

Germany, Austria-Hungary's allie, was looking for any excuse to go to war. So Germany issued Austria-Hungary a "blank check"that basically said that they would support what ever decision Austria-Hungary made.

Austria-Hungary decides to wage war on Serbia, and because France is Serbia's allie they get dragged into it as well as Britain and Russia. Thus starting The Great War/TheWar to End All Wars (World War One).

Hope I Helped ;)
