Contiditions were certainly better than in World War 1.

The morale of the army was a greater consideration than in the trench warfare of 1914-1918.

At the begining of the war the French army were stationed in heavily fortified deences along the border with Germany with underground hospitals and railways linking their positions.

For the German army being stationed in the West was a luxury compared to the Eastern Front.

After the Allies invaded Normandy there was a period of tough fighting for around 3 months before a significant portion of the German Army was surrounded and the Germans retreate back to the Rhine.

The toughest conditions for soldiers fighting in Europe were in Italy, especially around Monte Cassino. The German army here were much stronger than the troops stationed on the defenses of the Atlantic wall and the terrain and weather made the allied advance much more difficult.

It took 9 months for the Allies to reach Rome after they landed in Italy and less than 3 months to liberate Paris and reach the German border, only lack of supplies especially fuel prevented them from going even further.

Would a world political map show more detail than a Europe political map?

A Europe political map would show more detail, but only in Europe. If you are only focusing in on Europe, then yes it would show more detail because it is made specificaly for Europe. If you are searching for details of other countries or bodies of water or whatever you are looking for, then a world political map would show more detail.
