The south only had around 6,000 miles of track opposed to the north 22,000 miles of uniformed track. Not only did the south have much less track, they didn't have the same size track everywhere. In other words shipments may have to change trains 4 times to get to its destination. While the north on the other hand could go from start to finish in the original container. The south had to many people building trains and no regulation as a country.

The North had over 22,000 miles of track and were very industrialized. They never had to change containers when an item was shipped because it had the same size track throughout and was long enough to reach it's distance in one trip.
