"America should have minded her own business and stayed out of the World War. If you hadn't entered the war the Allies would have made peace with Germany in the spring of 1917. Had we made peace then there would have been no collapse in Russia followed by Communism, no breakdown in Italy followed by Fascism, and Germany would not have signed the Versailles Treaty, which has enthroned Nazism in Germany. If America had stayed out of the war, all of these 'isms' wouldn't today be sweeping the continent and breaking down parliamentary government, and if England had made peace early in 1917, it would have saved over one million British, French, American and other lives." Winston Churchill, 1936
The war might have lasted a few months longer, but by 1917 the German defeat was inevitable. For the last year of the war the German army was exhausted, constantly short on manpower and increasingly short of supplies. The allies had similar problems late in the war but in all cases were better off than the Germans, especially after the military collapse of Germany's allies.
Answer
World War 1 marked the first use of industrialized warfare. Prior to this, wars were (generally) fought by opposing sides in a (relatively) empty space. World War 1 saw the full scale rise of weapons of mass destruction, in that they were able to take out multiple targets, the use of airplanes and so on, as well the moving of battles into cities, which set the precedent for WW2.
In addition, if World War 1 had never happened, it is entirely possible that the NAZI party would have never been able to capitalize on the disenheartened and disenfranchised Germans to become the monstrous power the ultimately became.
Beyond that, its impossible to speculate on what "might have happened" and you should look at "alternate history fiction" (one famous author is Harry Turtledove) which specializes in this sort of exploration.
world war 1
Britain and France would of lost the war. We were exhausted, in massive debt and almost in ruins. Germany would of invaded Britain. There would be civil unrest, possibly a civil war. Also, Japan would of started to spread it's empire far and wide, whether the Allies had insulted their honour or not. I think that if the US hadn't helped us out, we would probably be under the control of the Germans,

World War 2 started when Germany attacked Poland. The U.S. joined the war when we were bombed by Japan.
The united states was bombed by japan and they joined WW2 to kick their butts.
If world war one had not happened then I don't think that world war two would have happened. Sometimes you have to ask yourself: What did it achieve? If you can't come up with an good answer then there was almost no point in the world war one. If world war one had not happened then there would probably not have been a world war two!
