In March 1935 Hitler reintroduced compulsory military service for all able bodied men reaching age 19.

By 1960, the British government had decided that Britain should rely on a full time professional army and not be dependent on conscripts. The last National Servicemen was demobbed in 1963.
The Australian draft (conscription) ended in December 1972.

The British adopted conscription in 1916 because they wanted to break the stalemate at the Western Front. They believed that if they had more soldiers at the front, the war would end quciker and they would win. Only down side was that the Germans had the exact same plan.
I was doing a project on this, and I think it ended after the Vietnam War in 1973, do to the war being heavily protested and rioted against.
By being elected on December 2nd 1972, Prime Minister Edward Gough Whitlam advocated for the end of conscription. By achieving the votes in the Upper House and Lower House, the bill was passed to abolish conscription. Also, public support strengthened the bid to abolish conscription.
This came to an end in 1997.
