Actually... The Japanies sign surrender papers on September 2, 1945. They were signed on the American battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
14 August 1945 (US time): Japan asked for an armistice (ceasefire)

(15 August 1945, Japan time)

2 September 1945: Japan formally surrendered. (now officially VJ Day in the US)

The Japanese first surrendered on August 15th 1945. It wasn't officially signed and confirmed until September 2nd 1945. This was because, the US dropped 2 Atomic Bombs onto Japan. Which killed around 225,000 People. Further people died due to exposure of radiation. Emperor Hirohito's surrender message was read over the radio on August 15, 1945, but the official surrender ceremony took place September 2, 1945 on a US boat docked in Japan
They officially surrendered on September 2, 1945. The decision to surrender was announced by Emperor Hirohito on August 15, 1945, about a week after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The announcement of the Japanese capitulation was made by Emperor Hirohito in a recorded broadcast on August 15, 1945, six days after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and nine days after Hiroshima.

The formal surrender was on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

Apparently the Japanese decided to surrender on August 15 1945. They issued a surrender that was later formally signed on the USS Missouri on the 2nd September. These events both happened after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima apparently the latest of which was the dropping of the Fat Man bomb on Nagasaki on August 9.
