The post of Minister of Defence was created by Winston Churchill in May 1940 and he held the post (in addition to the Premiership) until his electoral defeat on 1945. The older government departments for the army, the navy and the air force remained in existence till 1964. During World War 2 the role of the newly created Ministry of Defence was mainly to co-ordinate the work of these older departments and prevent rivalries and duplication of effort.
