The first soldier to die in WWI was a soldier by the name of Albert Otto Walter Mayer, a German Calvary man, who was shot and killed on August 2, 1914, after delivering a fatal shot to what would be the second death in WWI, Jules Andre Peugeot.

John Parr was the first British soldier killed in WWI. He was killed on August 21, 1914. He was killed by a German Sniper while he was with his partner. He and his partner were reconnaissance cyclists. They were sent up to the far front line slightly over the Belgium border to scout when they encountered a German cavalry patrol from the German First Army. Parr held off and distracted the German Army as long as he could while his partner rode back to the Middlesex Regiment to tell the commander what happened and where the enemy's position was. Private John Parr was shot by a German sniper. The Middlesex Regiment moved back to a village and Private John Parr's body was left where he fell. He was later buried in St. Symphorien Cemetery in France.
