Ulysses Simpson Grant.
U.S. "Sam" Grant was General of the Army of the United States and eighteenth President of the United States, but in 1860 he was indeed working in his father's leather shop in Galena, IL, having left the army and failing at several business ventures. Grant was no businessman, but he was a born soldier. It is not clear why he left the army. He was a West Pointer and had had what appeared to be a successful career in the army. He was considered an outstanding horseman and was one of only 50 captains on active duty when he abruptly resigned his commission in 1854. But when the Civil War broke out in 1861 he organized a company of volunteers. Eventually Lincoln commissioned him Lt. General (three stars) in the regular army and in March, 1864 he became General in Chief of the Armies of the United States, which post he held when he accepted Robert E. Lee's surrender in April 1865. A grateful congress created for him the rank of General of the Army of the United States, equivalent to four star rank today.
