The initial German allies were formed as the Central Power: Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary were as for the Americans allies consist of the U.K., France, Italy, and Japan after the Americans change from neutrality to offensive. Italy also varied from side to side. But , beforehand, the original alliance, called the Triple Entente, consist of the U.K., Russia, and France. Also Triple Alliance is related to the Germans while the Triple Entente is related to the United Kingdom initial group.

Considering that the US never was actually formally a member of the Allies, "friends" may be the best way of putting it. The US was on the side of the Triple Entente: the United Kingdom, France, and Russia.

By the end of the war, almost every major and most minor nations had joined the side of the Allies, including Italy, which had started off as nominally a member of the Triple Alliance (the opposite side, aka the Central Powers).

The related links section has a map showing which nations were part of the Allies (green), Central Powers (orange), and neutral (grey). Also, parts of that big orange blob in the Middle East were actually fighting for the Allies, or (perhaps more accurately) against the Turks.
