The Khmer Rouge won the first Cambodia Civil War (1970 - 1975). This led to the 'killing fields' genocide.

A second civil war (mid 1980s - 1991) concluded with the reinstatement of Prince Norodom Sihanouk.

A third civil war was more or less a continuation of the previous two, with the government fighting the Khmer Rouge until the final surrender of that group in 1998.

An abortive coup in 1997 was termed a civil war by some. It was between factions of supporters of Prince Norodom Ranariddh and of Hun Sen. Hun Sen won out.

The king abdicated due to poor health in 2004 and Norodom Sihamoni was selected by a royal council to replace him. This was done in peace and might signal that the end of the violence in Cambodia has come.
