It was the Triple Entente who had eventually won "the war to end all wars". The Triple Entente was, in August of 1914, consisting of France, Britain, and Russia. The opposite of the Triple Entente, the Triple Alliance, had at first consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, who had at the beginning of the war declared themselves neutral in all foreign affairs. Later on, in May of 1915, and after a bit of convincing by the Entente, Italy would join on the Entente's side and fight Austria-Hungary, who was on their Northern border. After this had occurred, The Ottoman Empire (now mainly Turkey) had taken Italy's place on the Triple Alliance. In 1917, the United States had finally, after having to deal with unlimited submarine warfare (seen by those time's standards as being unarristocratic and barbarian, the usual policy being the submarine having to warn the ship of it's arrival and it's plan to destroy that ship, giving the ship's passengers enough time to abandon ship), and having two ships, the Lusitania and the Sussex, had sent one hundred thousand soldiers to Europe. This was seen as a measly group of individuals which were given the nicknames of "dough boys". In 1918, the Triple Alliance had finally decided to create a treaty with the Triple Entente, known today as the Treaty of Versailles. On November 11th, at 11 a.m. (or, in other words, 11-11-11), the armistice was declared. Though this may be true, the German populace never really believed that theyhad lost the war, instead that it was their government which had given up so easily. This was, of course, caused by the fact that Germany was never actually invaded. This ambition had eventually played a vital role in the creation of World War Two.
