After World War I, the British had control of Iraq. In the early 1930's, the British granted Iraq a limited form of independence, but a lot of Iraqis didn't like that the British still had so much influence. In the early part of World War II, the Iraqi king died and his son became the new king, but he was only a young child. Some anti-British, pro-Nazi politicians took advantage of the situation to overthrow the government and take control.

Iraq was already an important oil-producing country, so Britain could not let that critical Iraqi oil supply switch to the Nazis. So they invaded and occupied Iraq until after the war ended.
