Why did Hitler break the non aggression pact with Stalin?

The non- aggression pact was formed, primarily because Hitler knew the German military would be unable to support and sustain fighting on 2 fronts. Hitler needed all his resources to fight the Allied forces in Western Europe, and that if he had to fight a soviet attack from the east at the same time, he didn't have enough men and equipment to do so.

Stalin had been pleading with Western leaders to help him try to contain Hitler for years, but they had a policy of appeasement rather than containment. Germany, and Hitler specifically, had expressed in the past that the conquest of Russia was their long term goal. Stalin knew he was no match for Germany without the support of the other European powers and decided that in order to buy himself time to mobilize an effective force to defend against Hitler, he would in the meantime have to sign the nonaggression pact.
