The death camps were kept outside of Germany because even if the people held there managed to escape somehow, they would have so far to go if they wanted to get back to Germany. As well, the supplies locally outside of Germany were cheaper to help build the camps.

The main extermination camps were in Poland. The main reasons were: # Poland contained nearly half the Jews under Nazi rule. # The Nazi leadership knew that the 'Final Solution' was not particuarly popular with the Germans; and in Poland it was easier to carry out genocide secretly or more or less secretly.
