Okinawa is very close to Japan. The Allies expected to have to invade Japan, and as part of that, needed the airfield on Okinawa in order for aircraft- especially bombers- to be able to assist in the planned invasion.

However, the battle was so incredibly fierce and bloody that it helped convince American leaders that an invasion of Japan itself would be too costly for both sides. This was one of the factors that led to the Americans dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings, along with Soviets invading Manchuria and easily destroying Japan's largest and most powerful army, caused Japan to surrender, thereby ending World War II.
